Summary

Best-selling author Dan Buettner debuts his first cookbook, filled with 100 longevity recipes inspired by the Blue Zones locations around the world, where people live the longest。

Building on decades of research, longevity guru Dan Buettner has gathered 100 recipes inspired by the Blue Zones, home to the healthiest and happiest communities in the world。 Each dish--for example, Sardinian Herbed Lentil Minestrone; Costa Rican Hearts of Palm Ceviche; Cornmeal Waffles from Loma Linda, California; and Okinawan Sweet Potatoes--uses ingredients and cooking methods proven to increase longevity, wellness, and mental health。 Complemented by mouthwatering photography, the recipes also include lifestyle tips (including the best times to eat dinner and proper portion sizes), all gleaned from countries as far away as Japan and as near as Blue Zones project cities in Texas。 Innovative, easy to follow, and delicious, these healthy living recipes make the Blue Zones lifestyle even more attainable, thereby improving your health, extending your life, and filling your kitchen with happiness。

I heard about Blue Zones from a friend and finally decided to check out some recipes。 I was interested to read about the different zones and what made the interviewed people feel happy and healthy。 I collected some recipes that I would like to make (24 of them!) and have learned what other staples to have on hand for healthier grains, veggies, and fruits。 If you're interested in Blue Zone foods, this book is a great place to start。 I heard about Blue Zones from a friend and finally decided to check out some recipes。 I was interested to read about the different zones and what made the interviewed people feel happy and healthy。 I collected some recipes that I would like to make (24 of them!) and have learned what other staples to have on hand for healthier grains, veggies, and fruits。 If you're interested in Blue Zone foods, this book is a great place to start。 。。。more

I found this book an encouragement in whole food living。 Simple foods that anyone can afford and they had bread! I've tried many types of health protocols for various gut and inflammatory conditions and this book felt like permission to eat lots of real food and a few treats too。 May you live long and prosper! How do you know when you're done reading a cookbook? I have read this book cover to cover twice。 The pictures are beautiful, and the descriptions of the region and its people are charming。 Most important for a cookbook, the recipes, which are easy to follow, are mostly winners so far。 How do you know when you're done reading a cookbook? Full of beautiful photos and delicious sounding vegan or vegetarian recipes, I’m inspired with ways to add more chickpeas and other legumes routinely into my diet。

Full of great recipes, this book provides a unique window into how you can define "healthy eating"。 Though it does focus too much on 'living to 100 years old', which seems a bit gimmicky, but fine。 Also, it had way too many desert recipes for my tastes。 Full of great recipes, this book provides a unique window into how you can define "healthy eating"。 Though it does focus too much on 'living to 100 years old', which seems a bit gimmicky, but fine。 Also, it had way too many desert recipes for my tastes。 。。。more

This is my third book on the Blue Zones topic and it has excellent recipes! Most of these can be quick done at home without much cooking experience or special knowledge。 I’m now inspired to use more beans in my daily diet。

I use some of these recipes。 Gorgeous book。 Some ingredients are too exotic to make our rotation。

I’ve read several other books on the Blue Zones-places in the world with the oldest living people。 Author Dan Buettner is a National Geographic Fellow and has been researching the Blue Zones with National Geographic since the early 2000s。Sardina OkinawaNicolaIkariaLoma Linda, California-only zone in the USAWhat I liked about this book is that it introduces you to each region with stories about the people and the recipes they use to not just to live a long life but also a good quality of life。Bue I’ve read several other books on the Blue Zones-places in the world with the oldest living people。 Author Dan Buettner is a National Geographic Fellow and has been researching the Blue Zones with National Geographic since the early 2000s。Sardina OkinawaNicolaIkariaLoma Linda, California-only zone in the USAWhat I liked about this book is that it introduces you to each region with stories about the people and the recipes they use to not just to live a long life but also a good quality of life。Buettner breaks down a few of the main recipes (and the stories that go with them) for easy use and suggestions for substitutions。The main connection between the people who live in these zones is that they work from whole ingredients, no processed foods, little or no meat and definitely no red meat。 Dishes are simple and pasted down through generations The secondary connection is the celebration of community and family, times to relax together and in nature。The most interest part to me is the California zone is due to the 7 Day Adventist Church that was founded in the early 19th century by Ellen White who believed that several places in the Bible, God is instructing them to not eat meat and a few other items。 I will admit that this is not the first religious group I’ve come across of to share this interpretation of the Old Testament。 。。。more

This book was a gift and I really enjoyed it。 I like reading about nutrition and appreciate the common sense approach rather than "fad" diets that circulate year after year。 This book outlines the Blue Zone theory where scientists have studied parts of the world that have lived to 100+(Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Nocoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California。 What do they have in common - a healthy diet, a strong sense of family/community, regular exercise, and I might argu This book was a gift and I really enjoyed it。 I like reading about nutrition and appreciate the common sense approach rather than "fad" diets that circulate year after year。 This book outlines the Blue Zone theory where scientists have studied parts of the world that have lived to 100+(Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Nocoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California。 What do they have in common - a healthy diet, a strong sense of family/community, regular exercise, and I might argue faith。 The book does seem to have an underlying agenda (a bit like Pollen's books), but there is no arguing that what it says is for our own good。 Sadly, our American diet is seeping into cultures around the world that have traditionally been healthy and even these Blue Zone locations are starting to see a decline in longevity as a result。 Again, I would suggest that social media may also play a part in the depth of social ties that is causing this breakdown as well。 In the end, some of the basics - good clean food, strong relationships, exercise - all in good balance to create a sense of well being contributes to a long, healthy life。 It's sounds easier than it seems sometimes。 。。。more

I found this concept to be really interesting and enjoyed the stories from each Blue Zone。 The recipes, though? Let’s just say if I have to be excited to eat piles and piles of beans, I’m pretty sure I won’t be living to be 100。

This was an eye-opening view to my approach to cooking and my obsession with cooking in order to complement meat on my plate。 I enjoyed the recipes from each chapter with the exception of the Ikarian one as it was a bit bland for my tastes。 I also appreciated learning that cooking doesn't need to be a huge and complicated process in order to deliver a great meal。 This was an eye-opening view to my approach to cooking and my obsession with cooking in order to complement meat on my plate。 I enjoyed the recipes from each chapter with the exception of the Ikarian one as it was a bit bland for my tastes。 I also appreciated learning that cooking doesn't need to be a huge and complicated process in order to deliver a great meal。 。。。more

Not all these recipes will work in a modern kitchen。 (Pay particular attention to the Ikarian sourdough recipe。。。2lbs of flour and 1 cup of water?) Either use your kitchen intuition or run them by a more experienced cook before frustrating yourself。

Eat your beans! Eat fresh vegetables and herbs! Yummy recipes and stories of those who enjoy them around the world。

I am on a mission to eat healthier and found this book helpful and inspiring。 The information isn't that surprising。 Eating less meat and more greens, grains, and beans tend to result in living longer。 I found several recipes to try but more importantly it gave me some general ideas about how to prepare food and how to eat。 I value that more than anything because day-to-day I'm not going to follow recipes but having a general idea is good enough for me。 I am on a mission to eat healthier and found this book helpful and inspiring。 The information isn't that surprising。 Eating less meat and more greens, grains, and beans tend to result in living longer。 I found several recipes to try but more importantly it gave me some general ideas about how to prepare food and how to eat。 I value that more than anything because day-to-day I'm not going to follow recipes but having a general idea is good enough for me。 。。。more

Advocate for the pleasurable reading of cookbooks! Fascinating cookbook! Big takeaways are that the less meat and dairy and the more beans and fresh veg and whole grains the better for lifespan。 Seems obvious。。。I found it interesting that fewer ingredients seems to also have a huge impact。 The book is broken into five places which are part of the blue zones。 Food is not the only element that grants long life - walking, love, simplicity, community。 So many that I want to make but to first try:Sardinia:Minestrone Three WaysQuick Greens and OnionsO Fascinating cookbook! has all of the things you want out of a cookbook: beautiful pictures, some stories, a mix of good recipes, and I found it overall pretty inspiring to live a better life and eat better food。 Agree with some of the other reviewers in saying that it's weird some of the recipes are "Americanized" to include bleached sugar and flour, but you can't win them all。 I've made several recipes from the book so far and they've all been great! has all of the things you want out of a cookbook: beautiful pictures, some stories, a mix of good recipes, and I found it overall pretty inspiring to live a better life and eat better food。 Agree with some of the other reviewers in saying that it's weird some of the recipes are "Americanized" to include bleached sugar and flour, but you can't win them all。 I've made several recipes from the book so far and they've all been great! 。。。more

Amazing gift from a friend! I enjoyed reading from cover to cover! This book has great information about the areas and cultures。 The pictures are beautiful! I was so excited about the recipes I made the butternut soup the night I finished the book。 I cannot wait to try more recipes。 Recommend highly。

I quite enjoyed this book。 I heard about Blue Zones on the Rich Roll podcast and glad I did。 Interesting read about the concepts that keep certain world regions super healthy。 Lots of simple recipes I’m looking forward to trying out too。

Easy recipes。 It works as a vegetarian/vegan beginners recipe book。 It has also given me ideas for side dishes since I had ran out of ideas。 My only beef with this book is that some of the ingredients are only found in those region the book covers so the results vary。

I highly recommend this book to anyone reflecting on their diet or lifestyle。 It’s more than just a cookbook — National Geographic nailed it with this 15-year research study。 It exposes something about living a good life that is so simple and obvious that we often miss it in our overcomplicated lives these days。Eat good simple foods with subtle yet sublime flavors while spending time with people you love and moving your body every once in a while。 Plus, drink red wine & coffee :) can’t complain。 I highly recommend this book to anyone reflecting on their diet or lifestyle。 It’s more than just a cookbook — National Geographic nailed it with this 15-year research study。 It exposes something about living a good life that is so simple and obvious that we often miss it in our overcomplicated lives these days。Eat good simple foods with subtle yet sublime flavors while spending time with people you love and moving your body every once in a while。 Plus, drink red wine & coffee :) can’t complain。 It blows all the aggressive and unrealistic diet advice out there out of the water。 It has drastically changed the way my family eats in the best way。 We enjoy our food a lot more without assaulting our taste buds with takeout meals。 The best part of the research was how it showed you don’t have to be rich to have a good life。 。。。more

This is a good back for learning basic recipes and ingredients to get you towards the Blue Zones longevity lifestyle。 The beginning of each area (Okinawa, Nicoya, Sardinia, Loma Linda and Ikaria) of the book describes the specific diet and lifestyle。 You might want to read Blue Zones first if you haven't yet。 And experienced and seasoned cooks will want to add more to these recipes。 But good starter。 This is a good back for learning basic recipes and ingredients to get you towards the Blue Zones longevity lifestyle。 The beginning of each area (Okinawa, Nicoya, Sardinia, Loma Linda and Ikaria) of the book describes the specific diet and lifestyle。 You might want to read Blue Zones first if you haven't yet。 And experienced and seasoned cooks will want to add more to these recipes。 But good starter。 。。。more
